Matt 26:41 (NLT)

Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!"

Temptation, it's something we face on a daily basis.
So what are we to do when temptation hits us?
We have two choices, either let the temptation overtake us and we fall into it, which becomes sin or.
We keep an eye out for it, so when we do see it coming, we will be strenthgend by our praying ahead of time for that strength.

What do I mean?
Notice the first part of today's verse; "Keep alert".
Like a watchman in a castle, watching out for the enemy as he comes to attack the castle.
So must we be watching out for sin, ready for battle when we see it coming.

Or think about a castle with no watchman, when the enemy attacks they are caught by surprise and defeated.
And we if we are not watchful, we get caught by surprise and are defeated too.

And what is our defense? The second part of the verse says to pray.
You hear this a lot from me, your pastor at church, and especially throughout the bible.
Why? Because the battle is something we cannot handle on our own.
In the battle against a castle this is man against man. But the battle of temptation is not man against man, but rather man against spirit.

  • Eph 6:12-18 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

  • Once again the end of these verses says to "pray always" never stopping. In other words acknowledging and having the one with you always, who has already won the battle, Jesus!

So today be a watchman, watching out for sin before it surprises you, and pray continually that the Lord will be with you and will show you the way of escape.

  • 1 Cor 10:13 (NLT) But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it.

  • Pray also that you will take that way of escape!
