Luke 11:1

Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

After the disciples asked Jesus this question we have His answer that we all know as the Lord's Prayer.
We all know it and can quote it. But if you think about it, since you can quote it, you have memorized scripture. Cool isn't it.
But that's not what today's devotional is about.

Think about the words Jesus spoke for the Lord's Prayer, or read it from the bible here in Luke 11.
When you do I want you to notice a few words that Jesus uses, like "us", "our" and "Your". When Jesus taught the disciples, and us how to pray, notice the words Jesus did not use, "I" or "me". We tend to focus on our own needs in prayer and not the needs of others. But Jesus is teaching us not to do that, but rather to pray for others more then ourselves. Even when Jesus was on the cross He prayed.

  • Luke 23:34a Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do."

  • Through Jesus' toughest times He still thought of others.

So how do we apply this to our prayer time, especially if you are going through tough times? Use the words Jesus used in His example on how to pray, use words like "us" or "our". When you are going through tough times we tend to forget that there are others struggling with the very same thing. So why not take this opportunity to pray for them as well, by doing so it takes the focus off of you and helps you to focus on the needs of others. Why is this good? Because if you are struggling with a problem, you know exactly what others are going through as well, so you know how to pray for them.

So in your prayer time change the words "I" and "me" to "us" and "our" and realize that you are not going through this alone and that God will get you through it as well as others.

  • 1 Cor 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

  • You praying for them may be their only way of escape, and yours as well.
