Luke 22:22-24
22 "And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" 23 Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
24 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.
Can you see what's going on here? Jesus just tells the disciples that He is going to be betrayed. Then they start to ask each other who would do such a thing. Then the conversation gets heated up as they start thinking that they are better then each other.
Think of how the conversation may have went.
"Who out of us would betray our teacher Jesus?"
"Well, I know it's wont be me, because me and Jesus are close buds."
"Well, it won't be me because I am smarter then you are."
"You may be smarter, but I have more money then you do."
"Oh yea, well my beard is longer then yours."
"Yea, I bet in heaven I will be greater then you because in heaven it doesn't matter how long your beard is."
And on and on.
I know this sounds crazy, and I'm sure it wasn't quite like this at all. But did you notice how the focus got off of Jesus and was put on themselves?
We can get into the same type of trap as we start our focus on Jesus, then start worrying more about ourselves then others. Soon we are number one and everyone else has to take a backseat to us, so we think.
Jesus tells them and us how we should really be.
Luke 22:27 "For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.
If you have been thinking of yourself lately and not been serving in the church, maybe it's time to stop thinking about you, and see to the needs of others.
If Jesus can serve, shouldn't we be able to do the same!
