with God

Prov 3:11-12

11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,
Nor detest His correction;
12 For whom the LORD loves He corrects,
Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

Do you remember as a child when you would do something wrong, you just knew you were going to get it, especially when your dad got home?
Why did we fear our earthly fathers so much and his punishment, but we don't fear our heavenly Father, God?
The Lord doesn't punish us because He likes to, just like a dad doesn't when his child does something wrong.
Now that you are grown up and possibly have your own kids, can you see where your dad was coming from?
You want to protect your child so he or she doesn't get hurt, just like your parents did.
It's the same way with God.
Notice verse 12 again "For whom the LORD loves He corrects" it doesn't say, "for whom the Lord is angry with He corrects".
No, whom the Lord loves, and that whom is you!

If you go out drinking and partying and messing around with another man or woman or maybe even drugs, this is wrong and you know it.
The Lord knows it to, and He knows how much it hurts you physically, emotionally and spiritually.
The Lord wants you to stop, not because He's a party pooper, but because He loves you!
The author of Hebrews knew this to well.
Read it and see if you see yourself as a loved child of God, or just a rebellious child.

  • Heb 12:7-11 (NLT) 7 As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Whoever heard of a child who was never disciplined? 8 If God doesn't discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children after all. 9 Since we respect our earthly fathers who disciplined us, should we not all the more cheerfully submit to the discipline of our heavenly Father and live forever?
10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God's discipline is always right and good for us because it means we will share in his holiness. 11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening--it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest
