Eccl 12:14

For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

We all do things for the Lord and hope in the time of judgment that the Lord will reward us for the good things that we do.
We give to the church and those in need and don't tell others that we are doing it.
We secretly leave things for people who are in need, not desiring a pat on the back for our good deed.
We clean and pick up trash at the church when no one is around to see.
We could go on and on with all the different things that we do and hope we will be rewarded for.
But one thing we seem to forget is that we will not only be judged for the good we do, but also the bad.

For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

When we think of the bad things we will be judged for, we think of giving and letting everyone know that we gave, or only doing when others can see us doing. Jesus said:

  • Matt 6:2 "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

  • But our devotional verse is speaking of more then that: Including every secret thing,

That means all the things you do when the pastor, or other church members or other Christians aren't around to see.
That means watching a dirty movie on TV instead of praying or reading your bible.
That means the gossip you may do with someone on the phone, thinking it's just between you and the person your talking to. We say, "Don't tell anyone, but________" and we seem to forget that even though others cannot hear us, God can.
Even Jesus gives us a one-sentence commentary on today's devotional verse.

  • Mark 4:22 (NLT) "Everything that is now hidden or secret will eventually be brought to light.

  • So, what are you doing in secret that will someday be exposed to the light, which is Jesus Christ?
If it's good, then thank Him for it, but, if it's bad, confess it to Jesus and ask Him to remove it from you.
It's better to expose it to Jesus know, then waiting until we are all in heaven where all will see it.
