with God

Prov 2:1-5

1 My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
4 If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,
And find the knowledge of God.

The California Gold Rush of 1849.
Hundreds of thousands rushed to California to try to get rich, by looking for gold.
Sad to say many lost everything, even their lives in their pursuit of earthly riches.

Many of us seek wisdom and understanding and the bible tells us how to look for it.

If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures;

Over 150 years ago, men and women sought riches with all their heart and were willing to give up what they had in hopes of having a better life in California.
But how hard do we search for wisdom and understanding?
I was listening to a pastor speaking today on the Internet, and he was saying how some churches have stopped their mid-week bible studies because the people just were not interested.
We tend to think that if we go to church on Sunday that we have all we need to get through the week.
What if you just ate one meal a week, how long do you think you would make it before you collapsed from malnutrition?
We tend to give up good food to get earthly riches, like cable TV, fancy new cars and homes, clothes so we can wear latest fashions, electronic toys, then we wonder why we have so little to eat or why our food is not that great, because we waste our blessing on others things that we really don't need.
We do the same thing with wisdom, we go to church once a week then find excuses for not attending a weekly bible study, but can find the time to go do others things. Then we wonder why we struggle or are weak spiritually.
Are we really searching for wisdom and understanding, or do we expect it to be laid in our laps?
Dominoes (Pizza) may deliver, but if you want wisdom and understanding, you have to go after it, because it will not come to you. If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures;
And when we do then: Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

Or as the NLT puts it.

  • Prov 2:5 (NLT) Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God.

  • And isn't that what we really want anyway!
