Mark 16:15

And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

"Preach it pastor"
How many times have you heard this or even said it yourself.
The problem with this is that we expect the pastor to be a preacher not a teacher.
But if you look throughout the bible and read of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, it does not include preaching as a gift of the Holy Spirit.

  • 1 Cor 12:28-30 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

  • Eph 4:11-12 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

  • So where do we get the idea that the pastor is suppose to be a preacher?
There are many passages that talk about preaching the word of God. Here is just one example.

  • 2 Tim 4:2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

  • The word preach means: Greek Word: euangelizo, which we get our English word evangelist.
Usage Notes: is almost always used of "the good news" concerning the Son of God as proclaimed in the Gospel

The problem is that we expect our pastors to be good if not great preachers. I do believe that they should preach, but that they are really gifted in teaching God's word.

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

The pastor teaches us, and in return, we go out and preach. Notice it also says to go to them, not bring them to the pastor.
When we expect the pastor to do the preaching we are pawning off our jobs on the pastor.
What do I mean? Look at today's devotional verse again.

And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
You also need to look at the verses after this one.

  • Mark 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

  • We are all commissioned to preach to the lost, not just our pastors. So stop trying to lay it all upon him, and get to work and do your job as well, which is to:

"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
