2 Chron 25:15
Therefore the anger of the LORD was aroused against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, "Why have you sought the gods of the people, which could not rescue their own people from your hand?"
"If I only had a new job".
"If I could just get a loan."
"I wonder what my horoscope says about today."
"Maybe I need more bran in my diet".
"If I never married him or her things would be so much better".
"I need to go shopping, I feel so much better after I go shopping."
I know some of these sound silly, some sound like something you would not say or do, and some may hit right at home with you today.
Nevertheless, the truth is that we all seem to look for ways to be comforted in this life. We examine our jobs, relationships, what we eat, what we think we need to buy, and so to make us happy or content.
But, the truth is that we are looking to the world for comfort. We are looking to the things this world has to offer that never helped anyone.
Yet we seem to forget that and to often go right back to it.
Next time you do, maybe you should quote this portion of today's devotional verse "Why have you sought the gods of the people, which could not rescue their own people from your hand?"
Then quote this next verse:
2 Cor 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
Will you seek the gods of the people, or the God Who created the heavens and the earth and is the GOD of all comfort?
