with God

1 Tim 1:4

nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

"Fight fire with fire."
"God helps those who help themselves."
"My dad was and alcoholic so I am to."

Simple little phrases that we tend to quote and I'm sure you could come up with a lot more yourself.
But the truth is that they are false statements, they are not found in the bible nor does the bible teach them.
But we still use them.
Anyone can come up with a clever little saying, but that doesn't make it true or correct.
But how many of these little sayings have you used to try to minister to others?
We say them because we remember them, maybe we should start spending more time remembering God's word, instead of catchy phrases.

"Fight fire with fire."
  • Matt 12:26 "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?

  • "God helps those who help themselves."
  • Psalms 40:17 But I am poor and needy; yet the LORD thinks upon me.
You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.

  • "My dad was and alcoholic so I am to."
  • Deut 24:16 "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall the children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin.

  • Ezek 33:16 (NLT) None of their past sins will be brought up again, for they have done what is just and right, and they will surely live.

  • If you can't back it up in scripture, then don't use it.
The best thing to back up with scripture is scripture itself!
