1 Cor 8:10-13 (NLT)

10 You see, this is what can happen: Weak Christians who think it is wrong to eat this food will see you eating in the temple of an idol. You know there's nothing wrong with it, but they will be encouraged to violate their conscience by eating food that has been dedicated to the idol. 11 So because of your superior knowledge, a weak Christian, for whom Christ died, will be destroyed. 12 And you are sinning against Christ when you sin against other Christians by encouraging them to do something they believe is wrong. 13 If what I eat is going to make another Christian sin, I will never eat meat again as long as I live--for I don't want to make another Christian stumble.

The scenario: You are hungry and know a place that makes great BBQ ribs. Sure, it's a bar, but you have no trouble with drinking. So you go on in because the ribs are just too good.
So you sit there and enjoy these great BBQ ribs, maybe some coleslaw and fries and a soda.
Everything seems fine and you pay for your food and walk out.
The only problem was a brother or sister in the Lord has seen you going in or coming out of the bar and they have a drinking problem. So they see you and figure it must be OK to drink if you go in there.
They don't know that you just went in there to eat and not to drink. So they indulge themselves and get back into alcoholism, drive home drunk and end up killing someone in a drunken car accident.

Not a very encouraging story is it?
I know it may sound extreme, but it could happen.
We as Christian really need to stop and think and even pray about what we do and where we go. Because even if it seems like no big deal to you, it may be a big deal or struggle for someone else.

  • 13 If what I eat is going to make another Christian sin, I will never eat meat again as long as I live--for I don't want to make another Christian stumble.

  • Even if it means staying out of that bar and never having the best BBQ ribs again.
