Romans 12:6a
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them
I read this joke at a Christian site and thought I would share it with you.
Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. They discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother.
The first said: "I built a big house for our mother."
The second said: "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver."
The third said: "You remember how our mother enjoys reading the Bible. Now she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took elders in the church 12 years to teach him. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse and the parrot recites it."
Soon thereafter, their mother sent out her letters of thanks.
"Milton," she said, "the house you built is so huge. I live only in one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Gerald," she said, "I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home so I rarely use the Mercedes. And that driver is so rude! He's a pain!"
"But Donald," she said, "the little chicken you sent was delicious!"
God has given us gifts through the Holy Spirit. But sometimes we can misuse them.
The reason could be that sometimes we don't know what they are. Or sometimes we know what they are, but not how to use them.
The end results are like the joke you just read, they get misused and wasted.
I say all of this to encourage you to study the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
How? First off pray and read the bible, you could start in I Corinthians chapter 12.
I also have done a series of studies on the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit.
I would also recommend a great book called "Living Water" by pastor Chuck Smith.
You could also ask your pastor for recommendations on books or he may even know of home groups that are teaching on them.
However you do it, it's something you need to do if you have no understanding of your gift(s) of the Holy Spirit.
It's like trying the program a VCR without reading the manual.
