1 John 3:11

For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,

The word "love" is so overused here in the USA.
We say that we love our pets. We love our children, we love our cars, I loved what I had for dinner last night, I love chocolate, I love my pet rock, I love my wife or husband, I love that girl in the magazine, I love that guy on that show, I love your hair, and so on.

Maybe people just took today's devotional verse and went to far with it, or maybe we just don't really know how to love or even the meaning of love.

Just think about these next verses next time you are about to say that you love something or someone.

  • 1 Cor 13:4-8a 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails.

  • This is the bible's definition of love and as I read it I don't see anything to do with loving what you had for dinner, your pet, your car or lusting after someone.

For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,

How are we to love one another? Read 1 Cor 13:4-8a again and you will know.
