5 Minutes a day / 5 Days a week
with God
1 Cor 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
As I was driving home from work today, I noticed my speedometer says that my car can go 130 MPH.
And as I thought about it I wondered why I never drove that fast.
There are a few reasons, like I never needed to get anywhere in that much of a hurry, also if I did I could get in an accident and hurt myself as well as others or even kill someone. Finally the main reason is the sign on the highway says 65 MPH.
So let's say that I wanted to see if this car would really go 130 MPH what would stop me. The simple answer would be, don't press the gas pedal all the way down.
Sound silly, but true if you think about it.
So what does all of this have to do with today's devotional verse?
Go back sometime and read the Ten Commandments and as you read them, realize that you have the ability to commit all ten of them. So what prevents you from murdering or stealing or committing adultery and so on?
Well like the road sign that says I can only go 65 MPH, God's word says not to do these things and we want to be obedient to God, right!
Plus we would end up in jail by breaking the law and having all sorts of horrible things happening to our family and us if we did.
Now these are really big sins (at least in our eye's), but what about the little ones like cheating on a test or taking something from work even if it is a few pieces of paper, or gossiping about someone, or_______? You fill in the blank with some sins you have committed recently or have been tempted with.
How do we not keep falling into these same sins day after day?
Although my illustration with my car was simple, just don't put the gas pedal all the way down.
The answer is, just don't do it!
Easier said then done you may be thinking.
We all don't push our cars to the limit because we are used to (or we should be) obeying the law.
So we should be with God's commandments, we should be so used to practicing them everyday, that it comes as easy to resist as not pushing the pedal to the metal.
So next time you are tempted, take a drive and remember that even though your car can go 130 MPH, you choose not to, and just as you can commit that sin, you choose not to!
