1 Cor 5:11

But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not even to eat with such a person.

Today on "To Every Man an Answer", a Christian call in show on CSN, a young man probably in his very early teens, if that old. Called in and asked about this verse.
It seems that someone in his family is living with a woman who professes to be a Christian, yet lives with this man.
This young man was concerned whether he and his family should have anything to do with this woman because she claimed to be a Christian, yet lived with a man out of wedlock.

Tough question by such a young man, but the answer should be easy to come by. We are to follow what God's word says.

It's a hard thing to do when you love someone, and you don't want to reject him or her. The advise given to this young man was to confront this person out of love, letting her know what God's word says and how it affects him and his family.
This is also scriptural and in fact is what God's word tells us to do.

  • Matt 18:15-17 15 "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 "But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.' 17 "And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

  • Usually if this would come before the church, the person's heart is so hardened that they don't really care.
Once again, this is a hard thing to do and it takes much prayer by the church to do such a thing. But we must be obedient to God and His word before we are to anyone else.

  • 1 John 3:10-11 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,
