Heb 9:13-15 (NLT)
13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow could cleanse people's bodies from ritual defilement. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our hearts from deeds that lead to death so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. 15 That is why he is the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, so that all who are invited can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
If you have read the Old Testament, especially Exodus through Deuteronomy, then you are familiar with the different rituals the children of Israel had to go through to be cleansed from their sin.
As you read through the Old Testament, you will also read of how over the years, hundreds of thousands of bulls, goats and rams were sacrificed to God.
It really made you think twice or even a third time about sinning. Because you knew that if you sinned you had to bring an animal to the priest for the cleansing of your sin.
But today we don't sacrifice bulls and lambs to God because Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.
But if you think about it, every time you sin, it's more that you put on Jesus on the cross.
Just as the children of Israel would think twice about sinning because of the sacrifice they had to go through not to mention the loss of an animal because of their sin(s). So we should think about what or sin will or has cost us.
No we don't lose an animal and have to go through the sacrificial sacrifices to be cleansed of our sins, because Jesus died for ALL our sins, not just some of them.
So what does it cost you now?
It would be like saying to Jesus every time you sin, "Thanks for dieing for me Jesus, now here is some more for you to die for on the cross and more pain to endure."
I know this may sound kind of harsh and it's not really intended to be, but we must not take sin lightly just because Jesus paid for all our sins on the cross.
So next time you are struggling with sin or even contemplating going into a sin, don't think about the animals that were sacrificed on the altar, but rather think of Jesus on the cross and how when He was on the cross every sin you committed was laid upon Him.
Psalms 51:16-17
For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart--
These, O God, You will not despise.
