2Tim 4:3-4 (NLT)
For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to right teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. They will reject the truth and follow strange myths.
If you look in the phone book under churches you can find hundreds of churches listed in your own area. But this doesn't mean that all the churches listed there teach God's word or even teach God's word in truth.
The word church means: a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly.
But Jesus made a reference to Peter and the church in the book of Matthew.
Mat 16:18 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Jesus was telling Peter that those who gathered together in His (Jesus') name is the true church.
But then there are those who claim to gather together in Jesus' name, but are they really?
Anyone can say that they are Christian and speak the name of Jesus, but that doesn't mean that they are Christians or that it's a Christian church.
Some use the name of Jesus but they speak of a different Jesus then the one of the bible.
They speak of Jesus as just a man or and angel. Some even say that Jesus is the brother of satan. All of this is not taught in the bible. So how do they come up with these ideas then?
One way is twisting God's word to their teaching and another is having a companion book to the bible. This companion book they say helps you to understand the bible and without it you cannot understand the bible and it makes it complete.
But the bible says this about all of these types of teachings.
2 Cor 11:3-4 (NLT) 3 But I fear that somehow you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to Christ, just as Eve was deceived by the serpent. 4 You seem to believe whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach about a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.
Gal 1:8-9 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
So be cautious of what church you go to and make sure they teach the bible in truth.
How do you know if they are or not?
Study God's word for yourself and allow the Holy Spirit to teach you and see if what they are teaching is really God's word.
Pray when you are looking for a church to attend and for God to guide you to where He wants you to be.
We go to church to be taught God's word and minister to others in need. If you are never challenged with the teaching you are receiving, then it's possible that you are not in the right church for you.
If you go to your church because the pastor makes you feel good with the teaching, but never challenges you or the sin you are in, then you are becoming like today's devotional verse.
2Ti 4:3-4 (NLT) For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to right teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. They will reject the truth and follow strange myths.
This week, ask God if you are in the right place and where He wants you, or if you are there because it's what you want to hear, not what God wants to speak to you!
