John 8:21-22

21 Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come." 22 So the Jews said, "Will He kill Himself, because He says, 'Where I go you cannot come'?"

Has someone ever been talking to you and your mind is just somewhere else, so you don't hear what he or she says or all of what they say?
What about in church? Have you ever been there with your mind wandering as the pastor is teaching and you seem to miss part of the teaching?

Well, here in today's devotional verses, it's not like that at all. The Pharisees are once again arguing with Jesus, and Jesus makes a statement, but they don't hear the whole thing.
Did you catch it in today's verses?

"I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come."

There response was not to the fact that they will die in their sins, but rather they were concerned with Jesus saying: "Where I go you cannot come."

I don't know about you, but if someone said I was going to die in my sins, which means you are going to hell when you die, then I would take notice of that statement and want to know how I could prevent this. After all, they were speaking with Jesus who had the words of eternal life. But they would rather argue with Jesus then to recognize Who He is. The Messiah and Savior of the world.

But then we do the same thing with God's word. We will read it and take what we like out of it and the rest just toss aside.
Here is an example of this.

  • John 8:11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more."

  • This was where the woman was caught in adultery and brought before Jesus. We have probably all read this story and even know this verse very well. We quote part of it as justification for our sins. Which part, "Neither do I condemn you."

We use this when we sin, then go right back to our sin thinking that Jesus will not condemn us just like this woman.

But that's not all Jesus said, He also told her, "go and sin no more"
So yes, Jesus will not condemn you, but you need to repent (Stop doing it) of your sin, which Jesus made very clear here.

So don't rush through God's word as you are reading. Take your time and allow the Lord to speak to you, even those verses you think may not be for you.
    Because they very likely are!
