John 2:5
His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."
There is a very interesting thing about today's devotional verse. But before I tell you what it is, you need to understand what's going on here.
This is the second chapter of the book of John with the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine.
Jesus has entered this wedding feast when Jesus' mother tells Him that they are out of wine at the wedding feast.
In today's verse this is where Mary (Jesus' mother) is telling the servants to listen to Jesus and do what He tells them to do.
The interesting thing is that this is the last time that Mary's words are recorded in the bible. That's right, after this point you never hear of Mary speaking again.
Why does that matter? Well many religions worship and pray to Mary, but listen to what Mary says. "Whatever He says to you, do it."
Mary never said to listen to her but to Jesus. Mary knew she was just God's vessel, a very special vessel, but still she knows that she is just like us, being used by God.
We tend to put pastors, Christian musicians, healers or those we consider strong Christians on a pedestal. But they will also admit that they are just God's vessels being used by God for His glory, not their own.
Remember I told you that Crystal Lewis was going to sing at our church this Sunday. Well she did come to church and tried to sing, but she had a problem with her throat and could barley even talk let alone sing. But it was one of the best worship times I have had in a long time. You see her band did 90% of the singing and they brought us into the presence of the Lord.
It wasn't because Crystal Lewis was there, but because her band had a heart to worship the Lord. The greatness wasn't Crystal Lewis' presence but the Lord's presence in the church.
So we shouldn't worship (Worship meaning not only in song but prayer also) Mary, Paul, Moses or even the Crystal Lewis' of today. But always worship the Lord because of Who He is, not because of His chosen vessels.
