1 Cor 10:19-20 (NLT)
19 What am I trying to say? Am I saying that the idols to whom the pagans bring sacrifices are real gods and that these sacrifices are of some value? 20 No, not at all. What I am saying is that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don't want any of you to be partners with demons.
I may offend some today, but I rather offend you with the truth then to allow you to believe in a lie.
Let's talk about statues today.
What about them?
It's sad to say but some believers still hold onto the belief of praying to statues. Some pray to Mary the mother of Jesus. Some will pray to saints, some to Buddha and some even pray to a picture of Jesus or Jesus on a cross they wear around their neck. We don't know what Jesus looks like, so you are praying to a man who may not look like Jesus at all.
There are many rituals that believers still follow and they try to bring into their relationship with Jesus Christ.
But Jesus set us free from the old ways we used to live. A statue of Mary, a saint, Buddha or even a false image of Jesus.
I know this offends some of you because you believe that praying to Mary or the saints is OK because it is what you have been taught since you were a child.
Mary was a person like us, She sinned just as we do, she had other children besides Jesus, and in fact the writer of James is Jesus' half brother and Mary's son.
John 7:3 His brothers therefore said to Him, "Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing.
And as far as saints go we are all called saints as believers.
1 Cor 6:2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
God speaks of statues in one of my favorites passages in Isaiah:
Isaiah 44:14-19 14 He cuts down cedars for himself, and takes the cypress and the oak;
He secures it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it. 15 Then it shall be for a man to burn, For he will take some of it and warm himself; Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread; Indeed he makes a god and worships it; He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it. 16 He burns half of it in the fire; with this half he eats meat; He roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He even warms himself and says, "Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire." 17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, His carved image. He falls down before it and worships it, Prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god!" 18 They do not know nor understand; For He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, And their hearts, so that they cannot understand. 19 And no one considers in his heart, Nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say, "I have burned half of it in the fire, Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals; I have roasted meat and eaten it; And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?"
"Shall I fall down before a block of wood" That is so cool and so true. If you think about it, when you pray before these statues, that's just what you are doing, falling before a block of wood, porcelain or even plastic.
You may not like that thought, but they are Gods words not mine.
Stop trying to bring your old rituals and statues into your relationship with God, get rid of your statues and pray and seek God and Him alone
Gal 4:8-9 (NLT) 8 Before you Gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods that do not even exist. 9 And now that you have found God (or should I say, now that God has found you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual powers of this world?
Read the next verse following today's devotional verses and decide for yourself.
1 Cor 10:21 (NLT) You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord's Table and at the table of demons, too.
