Matt 9:9

As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he arose and followed Him.

Jesus said two simple words to Matthew, "Follow Me." And Matthews response was, "OK Lord, but first I have to finish school", or maybe "OK, after I know more about the bible." Or he could have said, "OK Lord as long as it doesn't interfere with what I am doing now or if I don't have to miss my favorite show on TV."

No Matthew didn't say any of these things. He simply dropped what he was doing and followed Jesus.
Today the Lord wants to speak to someone, maybe even you. The Lord is asking you today to follow Him.
It may mean quitting your job, or leaving your friends or even your family. Maybe you don't need to quit your job or move away, but still the Lord has been asking you to do something. You have been hearing the Lord speak to you, but you have been coming up with excuses.

  • Luke 9:59-60 59 He said to another person, "Come, be my disciple."
The man agreed, but he said, "Lord, first let me return home and bury my father."

60 Jesus replied, "Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead. Your duty is to go and preach the coming of the Kingdom of God."

  • When some read this verse they think that Jesus doesn't have a heart or doesn't care, because this poor mans father is dead and Jesus is not allowing him to go and bury him.

But the thing is, his father wasn't dead. It may have been 20 or 30 years before this mans father was even ready to die. He was making up an excuse not to follow Jesus now.

What has been your excuse not to follow Jesus?

Maybe you are a Christian and the Lord is calling you to a certain ministry, but your excuses are like the man we just read about.

Tomorrow, tomorrow, we always say, "I'll do it tomorrow."
Today is yesterdays tomorrow, so tomorrow is here.

    Now what's your excuse?
