with God

Acts 16:25-26

25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed.

When you read things like this in the bible, do you ever wonder why they don't happen like this today?
I'm talking about miracles here. We read this and wish we could be like Paul, singing praises to the Lord and miracles happening just like the earthquake and the prison doors being opened, or a mighty rushing wind with all being filled with the Holy Spirit.

That would be cool, but you also have to remember that just before this earlier in the day Paul and Silas where beaten. We're not talking a little beating, but a beating so sever that their back where ripped open with muscle and blood pouring from the wounds.
Do you still want to be like Paul, or do you just want the miracles that he experienced?

We tend to seek miracles; we think it will build our faith.
"Why can't it be like it was 2000 years ago with the new Christians and all the miracles taking place?"
It's a question we think about and even ask. But Jesus has an answer for you.

  • John 20:29 Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

  • We seem to forget that it is not by miracles that we believe, but by faith in God.
The world says, "Show us a miracle and we will believe."

  • John 6:30 Therefore they said to Him, "What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?

  • Jesus' answer was not to show a miracle, but for them to perform an act of faith by believing in Him.

  • John 6:40 "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

  • So don't seek signs and wonders or miracles to build your faith. The bible says how to build your faith.

  • Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  • Look to God's word to build your faith and not signs and wonders.
If you are spending time seeking signs and wonders then you are spending little or no time in God's word, which is where your faith will be built up!
