Phil 2:3 (NLT)

Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself.

Today we are told to make a name for ourselves in order to succeed in life.
Walk on whomever you have to, and if others won't get out of your way, push them out of the way. After all it's your future and your family deserves the best you can give them, right?

It is true; your family does deserve the best you can give them. But making a name for yourself, or walking on others will not make your family proud of you. In fact they may learn to despise you like others do.

Take Jesus as your example. He never walked on others (but He did walk on water) He never pushed others out of the way (But He drew all men unto Himself). And He hid from fame and being noticed.

  • Matt 16:20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

  • Mark 7:36 Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it

  • Jesus is creator of the heavens and earth, but He humbled Himself and became a servant to all, even on the cross He was a servant. Serving our need for a savior.

  • Phil 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

  • So if you want to be like Jesus, Don't seek fame and fortune, but rather seek to serve others, just as Jesus did.
He was obedient even to the point of death. So must we die to our self-seeking and the fortune of this world.

  • James 2:5-7 (NLT) 5 Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn't God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren't they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? 6 And yet, you insult the poor man! Isn't it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? 7 Aren't they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?
