James 2:1-4 (NLT)
1 My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim that you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people more than others?
2 For instance, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in shabby clothes. 3 If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, "You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor"--well, 4 doesn't this discrimination show that you are guided by wrong motives?
Reading this verse we seem to remember it and try not to look down on the poor and needy.
But you could also look at it in another way.
What if someone drives up in a Rolls Royce, steps out in his tailored suit and $500.00 pair of shoes. He has gold rings on his fingers and gold chains around his neck.
Do we judge such a person without looking at his heart?
If we do then we are doing the same thing as we did to the poor person that today's verse is talking about.
We tend to look at the outward appearance and judge based on what we see without really getting to know a person.
What if God said that you are too rich or too poor?
What if He said He didn't like the way you dress or do your hair, or how thin or heavy you are?
What kind of God would that be who judged upon your appearance?
But God looks at our heart not our outward appearance.
1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
Think about that before you look at someone, whether dressed in a suit, or torn up Levis and a T-shirt.
That also goes for, in the church, or out of the church!
