with God

1 Sam 17:28-29, 32-33, 41-44 (NLT)

28 But when David's oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking to the men, he was angry. "What are you doing around here anyway?" he demanded. "What about those few sheep you're supposed to be taking care of? I know about your pride and dishonesty. You just want to see the battle!"
29 "What have I done now?" David replied. "I was only asking a question!"

32 "Don't worry about a thing," David told Saul. "I'll go fight this Philistine!"
33 "Don't be ridiculous!" Saul replied. "There is no way you can go against this Philistine. You are only a boy, and he has been in the army since he was a boy!"

41 Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, 42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. 43 "Am I a dog," he roared at David, "that you come at me with a stick?" And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 44 "Come over here, and I'll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!" Goliath yelled.

We have all heard and/or read of the story of David and Goliath. (I would encourage you to read it again in I Samuel chapter 17)
Today's verses tell a portion of the story. But notice one thing about each one of these verses.
David was told he couldn't do it.

Goliath made fun of him and said he couldn't kill him. The king said he was too young and couldn't do it; and worst off his brother, a part of his own family said he couldn't do it.
Talk about no support at all. After all the whole nation of Israel was at stake here, and no one believed in David.

But it didn't matter to David, because his trust wasn't in what people thought or said, but rather in God.

  • 1 Sam 17:45-47 (NLT) 45 David shouted in reply, "You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD Almighty--the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone will know that the LORD does not need weapons to rescue his people. It is his battle, not ours. The LORD will give you to us!"

  • I get so excited every time I read this, because it reminds me of what an awesome God we serve!

Maybe you've been feeling like a David with people telling you that you can't do something when the Lord has put it in your heart to do it, and through it He will be glorified.

Today I would encourage you to look to the living God.
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The God who sent His only Son Jesus to die for your sins.
The God who King David as a young boy, believed in although the world was saying, "no you can't do it."

David knew he couldn't do it, but rather he knew his God could do it.
Do you know your God can do it for you too? Trust in Him with all your heart like David did, and He will slay that giant that is in your path.
