with God

1 Cor 10:12-13

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

My wife could live on nothing but fruits and vegetables. Me, I'm a steak and potatoes man, or hamburger and fries (which is more within my budget). I don't care much for vegetables, and most of them I do not eat because I just don't like them.

But give me a good BBQ'd hamburger or spare ribs, and I'm in heaven (so to speak).

So what does this have to do with today's devotional? Look at verse 12 again:

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

We sometimes don't understand how someone can be so weak in a certain area of his or her life when for us it's a piece of cake. But then what is tough for us is a piece of cake for someone else.

Maybe you don't have a problem with lust, or smoking, or drinking, or overeating, or…?
But somebody you know has a problem with one or more of these items.

My weakness is BBQ'd hamburgers, but not my wife, because we have different tastes in food. Her weakness is vegetable drinks made at home from a machine or fresh vegetables.
But regardless of whether we understand why or not, there is one thing we can all relate to, and that is weakness.

You know what your weakness are concerning sin; the bad part is, so does Satan. He knows which buttons to push and how hard to push them.

But you know what? It's not a sin to have your button pushed (so to speak). The sin can come by your reaction to the button pushed.
James says:

  • James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

  • James doesn't say "If" you are tempted, but rather "When" you are tempted.

So when your button is pushed, don't let that make you think you have sinned, the result of the button being pushed (or temptation) will determine if you sin or not.

Also remember that God made us uniquely, all with our own likes and dislikes. So your button may be different then someone else's. But don't condemn them for that, but rather encourage them in the Lord for He is our strength in times of trouble.

And consider yourself because you have buttons to push also, they may just be in different places then someone else's.
