Heb 5:12-14 (NLT)
12 You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things a beginner must learn about the Scriptures. You are like babies who drink only milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 And a person who is living on milk isn't very far along in the Christian life and doesn't know much about doing what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who have trained themselves to recognize the difference between right and wrong and then do what is right.
Have you ever seen a child over the age of five running around with a bottle?
When you see this, don't you wonder about what their parents are teaching them?
Now, Have you ever seen a Christian running around with a bottle?
"What are you talking about Steve?"
I'm talking about someone who has walked around for years as a Christian, but have never grown.
They only listen to others but never teach others. They have absolutely no answers when others come to them about God. It's like a fifteen-year-old child who has been in the first grade all their life.
I know that this may sound sort of harsh, especially if this person may be you.
So why does this happen? And how do you or they get the meat of the word and not just the milk?
Sometimes it's because of the teaching they are getting. It may be time for them to find another church or even start going to church.
How would you know?
Do you feel comfortable when the pastor is teaching or do you feel challenged? Do you get excited about Jesus, or are you just there because you think it's your duty as a Christian.
There is nothing wrong with going to another church. It's one way to grow.
Another reason may be, because they are not in the word everyday.
Reading and studying God's word is spiritual food for us, so we will grow as Christians.
Did you forget to eat lunch or dinner yesterday? I'm sure you didn't. If you tried your stomach would let you know by growling and saying, "feed me".
What about your spiritual stomach? Has it been growling lately?
Anther way is by eating junk food. Spiritual junk food is what the world feeds us. You get it from TV, the radio, magazines, newspaper, the people you hang out with, the Internet, etc.…
Potato chips, candy, soft drinks, sugar etc., if constantly eaten will only make you sick.
So it is with the things of this world. If that is all you eat feed yourself, then you will never grow as a Christian.
So today make the choice to get off the spiritual bottle, and get ready for a nice juicy steak in God's word.
A couple of places to eat are the bible studies I teach here.
Another is CSN, which stands for the "Calvary Satellite Network" which has different Calvary Chapel pastors teaching. I like them because they don't teach on a subject, but rather the whole bible so you get all of God's word and not just a few selected verses.
If you can't find them on the radio then go to the "Christian Fun Links page" and click on the CSN link and you can listen on the Internet or find the local listing for the radio station in your area.
Or look in the phone book and try a few churches in your area. I suggest staying away from the Mormon Church, Latter-day saints (Jehovah witness), New age churches, LA church of Christ. If you have a question about a church, feel free to E-mail me and I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Or if you can't find a church or would like a suggestion for your area, I can help you there too.
Happy Eating!
